Dear Marcia

Every week, renowned Bay Area wedding consultant and instructor, Marcia Coleman Joyner, answers your questions in her column, Dear Marcia. Submit a question or view recent columns.

Question : Dear Marcia, We are an early 40's couple. This is the second marriage for me and the first for my fiance. Because of our age and where we are in life, wedding presents aren't a big need. Someone suggested we have a money tree or dance. Is this tackey. If not do you put it on the reception invitation? Sincerely, Tonya

Answer :

Dear Tonya,

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ENGAGEMENT!

Due to your age, I would not recommend a money tree or money dance. In addition, etiquette dictates that requests for money NEVER be included in an invitation to the wedding or reception.

Alternatives would be to:

1. spread the word via family and friends that you prefer money over gifts;
2. based on your lifestyles, register at non-traditional stores (e.g.: ha rdware, camping, etc.);
3. register for a honeymoon.
The latter is a great idea, as once the honeymoon is paid in full, you receive any cash balance.

All the best to you!

With warm regards,

Marcia

Question : Hello, Marcia. I'm in the process of considering my registry and have an etiquette question that I wanted to ask you: Is it proper to ask for furniture on a registry? We really only need furniture (and love some of the Crate And Barrel stuff) but it is very pricey and seems inappropriate to put on a registry. Or, is there a way to (politely) tell people that gift cards toward furniture are appreciated/welcomed? Please let me know your thoughts. I don't want to make any faux pas! Many thanks, Michele G.

Answer :

Dear Michele,

Gift Cards are tantamount to cash, and are perfectly acceptable, as long as your guests feel comfortable with the idea.

According to Emily Post's WEDDING ETIQUETTE, it's important NOT to include any registry information in your Engagement Party Invitations, Wedding Invitation ensemble or Wedding Announcements.  It is, however, perfectly acceptable to include the information in any Shower Invitations.

The best way to spread the word is via family, wedding party, friends and your website (if you have one).  Let them know that you're saving for furniture, so if they like the idea of giving a check or Crate And Barrel gift card as a gift, that's how you will use it.

I wish you all the best!

With warm regards,

Marcia
